As ‘medicine’ sometimes seems stuck in the paradigm of acute symptom management, human culture is rapidly moving beyond that in the search for an approach to ‘health’ that doesn’t just temporarily manage symptoms but which looks at the complete picture of an individual human. This approach recognizes that problems of the body often originate in the mental/emotional world and that treating mental/emotional problems can (or even should) include a physical approach that works through the body. Likewise, whilst the old paradigm might see the spiritual world only happening in a temple or church, I see spiritual lessons unfolding in the human body, on the mats of the dojo, on the wards of the hospital and everywhere that we live…even in the temple, mosque, or church.
